What the Heavenly Father expects from Earthly Fathers (SS)

Sabbath School
Summary
This program outlines biblical admonishments to fathers on how to perform their role as fathers on earth. Our Fathers are towers of strength in our lives and our church, whether they are biological or adopted fathers (legally or informally). We don't have to wait till father's day to talk about fathers. God being the father of all, is the one who knows how best to be a real father. In this program, we will see what advice from the bible God has given to our fathers.
Program Aim
To impart firm principles critical to every father or father figure that will help them perform their God given responsibilities.

ICEBREAKER:

Hand out blank index cards or sheets of paper to women and young people. On one side, ask them to write compliments to all the fathers by identifying something you admire about fathers in the church. It can be something that is done by one or more fathers, do not be specific with names. On the other side write something you wish more fathers would do.

Collect the papers before or during the lesson study.

If this is an online program, ask the participants to leave comments in the software that is being used or send you a private message using an application that you specify. You will read them out loud at the end of the program.

WELCOME:[1 minute]:

(This poem can be read by a child)

Walk with me Daddy

Walk alongside me, daddy
and hold my little hand.
I have so many things to learn
that I don't yet understand.

Teach me things to keep me safe
from dangers every day.
Show me how to do my best
at home, at school, at play.

Every child needs a gentle hand
to guide them as they grow.
So walk alongside me, daddy -
We have a long way to go.

Opening Remarks:

A father's worth and role cannot be denied or understated. Dad brings stability to the home by being the provider, priest and protector. He brings joy and laughter as well as correction. God has high expectations for dads and has endowed YOU(dads), with traits that mirror the image and likeness of God. Children are meant to experience God through you first. Today we will take a look at what our heavenly father expects from our earthly dads.

Activity from Children’s Division: Song/Children giving reasons why they love their Dad

Presentation:

  1. God expects dads to make time for their family:

In Bible times men were personally involved in the education of their children. Fathers were encouraged to spend time with their children on a regular basis, as is made evident by the Bible’s words at Deuteronomy 6:6, 7, which say: “These words that I am commanding you today must prove to be on your heart; and you must inculcate them in your son and speak of them when you sit in your house and when you walk on the road and when you lie down and when you get up.”

  1. God expects dads to teach their children

Great fathers are great teachers, God expects fathers to teach wisdom to their children. Children learn not only by what they hear, but also by what they see, teach them to seek wisdom and understanding by living a life centered around God’s will. Because Proverbs 9:10 says “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.”

Proverbs 4:1-9(ESV)
Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding. 2 For I give you good doctrine, forsake ye not my law.3 For I was my father's son, tender and only beloved in the sight of my mother. 4 He taught me also, and said unto me, Let thine heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live. 5 Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth. 6 Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee: love her, and she shall keep thee. 7 Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding. 8 Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee to honour, when thou dost embrace her. 9 She shall give to thine head an ornament of grace: a crown of glory shall she deliver to thee.

  1. God expects Daddies to be Good communicators

Good communication starts with listening. Great dads listen, then if necessary, they speak. And when they do they are words “fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver” - Prov.25:11. “Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply.” but the bible encourages dad by declaring that “Every man must be swift about hearing, slow about speaking, slow about wrath.” (James 1:19) Fathers who apply this Bible principle are able to communicate better with their children.

  1. God expects Daddies to Give Loving Discipline and Commendation

Discipline is much more effective when a father commends his children regularly. Commendation enriches a child’s character. Children blossom when they are acknowledged and appreciated. A father who looks for opportunities to give commendation will help to build confidence in his children and motivate them not to give up trying to do what is right.

“You fathers, do not be exasperating your children, so that they do not become downhearted.”—Colossians 3:21.

  1. God expects Daddies to Love and Respect Your Wife

The way a father exercises his role as a husband is certain to positively affect children. One group of experts on child development explains: “One of the best things a father can do for his children is to respect their mother. A father and mother who respect each other and let their children know it provide a secure environment for them.”—The Importance of Fathers in the Healthy Development of Children. *

“Husbands, continue loving your wives . . . Let each one of you individually so love his wife as he does himself.”—Ephesians 5:25, 33.
