Artificial Intelligence and the Ellen G White Database
This article was written to directly address the concerns a few people have expressed about using artificial intelligence to create a chat-like experience with Ellen G White's books. Click here to see the app in question.
I have removed the wording "talk to Ellen White" and "bringing her back to life" because I realized it was triggering and distracted people from the usefulness of the tool itself.
For the record, we are bible believing Seventh-day Adventists in good and regular standing and only subscribe to the doctrine outlined in the 26th fundamental belief of the Seventh Day Adventist Church relating to the state of the dead.
For either passing fame or out of ignorance, many have run off claiming this app is somehow demonic, or is doing the Devil's work - I can rebut with the statement that many will "call good evil and evil good". Any careful assessment or simply contacting us would have cleared up any misconception, but nothing sells attention like fear.
So please read our disclaimer below to understand what we have created.
WARNING
This is not a real person, and we are not trying to impersonate Ellen White.
We firmly believe that the dead know nothing, and we are not trying to communicate with the dead.
Instead, we are trying to make her WRITINGS more accessible to the world in a more usable way. Of all the negative comments, none have addressed the responses supplied by the chatbot.
ALL answers given are backed up by multiple references to her books with excerpts from the books.
This tool was built using artificial intelligence.
Artificial intelligence has been overplayed in popular movies and portrayed as a living soul that can make decisions, have thought, and carry out tasks.
If this is your belief, you are attributing the ability to create life to fallible and mortal human beings. If you believe man can create intelligent life, you are in essence making them a god, which is impossible.
The truth is that it is still a computer that takes input from a human and produces output, albeit more complex and human-like. It is an advanced version of Google, which our grandparents in the 1800s may have called a work of the devil out of ignorance.
There is nothing inherently good or evil about artificial intelligence; it is a tool in the hand of the user and is wielded for good or evil. This is no different from the sword that Saul fell on, or that represents the word of God.
Using fear of the unknown to avoid technology and demonize it is a strategy Christians have repeated for decades out of ignorance. Christians have called debit cards, the Internet, cell phones, and cable TV the devil's tool. Admittedly, all have been used for evil in one way or another. When in the hands of evil men, these tools have been terrible weapons of mass destruction.
These tools have also been equally destructive to the devil's kingdom when used by people and organizations of God, such as Amazing Facts, 3ABN, and the Hope Channel.
We understand that even if we explain in fine detail how artificial intelligence works, many will not be able to accept it as a tool for God's work, and that's OK.
Using this technology may not be your calling. What we beg of you is not to be a stumbling block to the progress of the gospel out of fear and ignorance. Let God-fearing men and women who understand how to use these tools operate with care and zeal to finish the work of the Lord. History may not look back at your actions in a good light.
Instead, seek knowledge, have open conversations, have a genuine and learning spirit, and most importantly, test the spirits and see if they are of God. Instead of supposing and comparing AI to the witch of Endor, quote exact false statements and actual errors made by the system.
If you find issues, instead of running with gloom and doom, speak to us, and we will edit the program to ensure the answers align with our beliefs. Unlike the misprint in "The Wicked Bible," we can immediately correct any error and ensure that the content is in line with the word of God or directly quoting from Sis. White.
I leave these bible verses for you to ponder:
1 John 4:1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
1 Thessalonians 5:21 Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.
2 Timothy 1:7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
